Objectives

Driving Innovation in Bio-based Polyurethane Solutions

Our goal is to enhance thermal insulation, acoustic performance, and vibration damping, providing sustainable solutions that significantly reduce energy loss in refrigerators and piping systems, while also improving acoustic comfort in dishwashers.

Implementation and strategies

To fulfill this objective the strategy followed in BIODESIGN4INSULATION is to develop polyurethane (PU) material based on bio-polyols and bio-additives. Two different materials are going to be created. Rigid PU foams for thermal insulation applications and a PU elastomer for damping of vibrations and acoustic insulation applications.

To accomplish the target, it is necessary to stratify the work into three different strategies:

Strategy #1

Development of bio-polyols to produce rigid PU foams and PU elastomers and selection of bio-based additives.

Strategy #2

Development and production of bio-based rigid PU foams for thermal insulation of refrigerators and pipes.

Strategy #3

Development and production of bio-based PU elastomer for damping and acoustic insulation of dishwashers.

Impact

BIODESIGN4INSULATION will make a great impact on sustainability by drastically reducing energy losses on refrigerators and dishwashers (two of the most energy-consuming appliances) and by improving the thermal insulation in pipes. Additionally, the products developed in the project will incorporate bio-based raw materials.
